PROCLAMATION
In observance of
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Whereas, in the United States, Women’s History Month traces back to the first International Women’s Day in 1911 and was extended to Women’s History Week in 1978; and
Whereas, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation declaring National Women’s History Week, stating “from the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed;” and
Whereas, a year later Congress provided bipartisan support and, in 1987, extended the Week to Women’s History Month. Since 1988, the United States of America has recognized March as Women’s History Month; and
Whereas, the theme of 2024 is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” recognizing women throughout the country who believe a positive future can only be achieved by eliminating bias and discrimination entirely from all of our lives and institutions; and
Whereas, American women of every race, ethnicity, and background have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of freedom, suffrage and equal opportunity, also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, the peace movement, and other movements which create a more fair, just and inclusive society for all.
Now Therefore, I, the Honorable Laura R. Hoydick, Mayor of Stratford, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Town, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2024
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
in the Town of Stratford and call upon all citizens to celebrate the numerous contributions women have made to our community, state, nation and world.
