Introduction to Overhead Line Work (UI) is a three-week comprehensive program designed to introduce the fundamental skills of electric linework to individuals who are interested in highly skilled trades. Brought to you by a partnership of United Illuminating (UI), the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 470-1, CT State Community College Housatonic, and The WorkPlace, this certificate program will teach participants how to ensure the safety and reliability of our electric system. Held at UI’s Trumbull Training Yard, this hands-on training program will be led by CT State Housatonic Community College in collaboration with UI Electric Operations experts and UWUA Local 470-1 leaders.

Creating Value for… Participants

  • Participants who are accepted into the program will receive hands-on training and practical safety instruction in the field of electrical line construction.

  • Skills taught will include the safe handling of high- and low-voltage lines, utility poleclimbing, hardware installation, and managing live lines with appropriate protective gear.

  • Upon completion of the program, participants will be prepared to be entry-level line workers.

  • Through The WorkPlace, participants can receive this training at no-cost. To be eligible for funding, participants must be:

    • Legally able to work in the U.S.

    • Either be unemployed or underemployed
