What is the Social Host Law?

Connecticut enacted its Social Host Law in 2012, holding property owners fully accountable for any underage drinking on their premises, even if they are unaware of it.

Allowing minors to consume alcohol in your home or on your property is a class A misdemeanor offense and can lead to penalties such as fines, court-ordered evaluations, jail time, probation, or other criminal charges. This law also extends to cannabis, which is only legal for adults aged 21 and over.

You Can Prevent Underage Drinking

The good news, according to our latest youth survey of 7th - 12th graders, is:

  • Rates of recent alcohol use among Stratford teens continue to decrease

  • 95% believe their parents disapprove of alcohol use

  • 89% of teens say their parents have clear rules about underage substance use

  • 79% say their parents take steps to reduce accessibility to alcohol

To keep up the positive trends, it's important to continue having conversations with your teens to let them know your rules and expectations when it comes to drinking alcohol. Instead of having one "big talk," try to find opportunities to discuss it during everyday activities, like car rides, mealtimes, or walks.

Youth who start drinking before age 15 are six times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or misuse later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21.

Lock Your Liquor!

Our survey showed 34% of Stratford teens say it's easy to get alcohol at home. Removing access to alcohol in your home is a simple way to prevent underage drinking.

Be a Good Role Model

Your kids are watching and listening even when you think they aren't, so what you say and do matters.

  • Drink responsibly and never drink and drive

  • Show healthy ways to unwind like taking a walk, doing a hobby, or listening to music

  • Don't give alcohol to minors
