WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH PROCLAMATION

By The Honorable Laura R. Hoydick, Mayor: a

PROCLAMATION

In observance of

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Whereas, in the United States of America, Women’s History Month traces back to the first International Women’s Day in 1911 and was extended to Women’s History Week in 1978; and

Whereas, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation declaring National Women’s History Week, stating “from the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed”; and

Whereas, that a year later Congress provided bipartisan support and in 1987 went further to extend the Week to Women’s History Month and the United States of America has recognized March as Women’s History Month since 1988; and

Whereas, the theme of 2023 is Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories, in recognition of women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling including print, radio, TV, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, news, and social media; and

Whereas, women of every race, ethnicity, and background have made contributions to the growth and strength of our Nation, State and Town in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and

Whereas, American women of every race, ethnicity, and background have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of freedom, suffrage and equal opportunity, also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, especially the peace movement, which create a more fair, just and inclusive society for all.

Now Therefore, I, the Honorable Laura R. Hoydick, Mayor of Stratford, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Town, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2023 as

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

in the Town of Stratford and call upon all citizens to celebrate the numerous contributions women have made to our community, state, nation and world.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Official Seal of the Town of Stratford, this first day of March, in the year of our Lord, two thousand and twenty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh.

Laura R. Hoydick

Mayor
